Chief Seattle is running Powder Horn at Camp Fife on Aug 8-11.
What is Powder Horn? It's a BSA course that teaches Adults and older Scouts how to safely conduct High Adventures activities like whitewater, climbing, shooting, leave no trace, etc. See syllabus.
It would be great if someone from our Troop could attend. People who have attended in the past did whitewater, climbed, shot big guns and learned how to run a High Adventure program. .
Unlike many units, our Troop already has a High Adventure Program. That said, participants will likely take home many new ideas about what our Troop can do in the future and the skills and knowledge of how to conduct these activities safely. They will also connect with many local Scouters and guides that share similar interests. You also get a really cool metal 2" Venturing recognition piece that hangs from a button of your left shirt pocket.
The course is open to Scouts 14 and older and Adults.
Topics include:
Astronomy
Backpacking
Canoeing/Kayaking
Cave Exploring
Challenge Events/COPE
Climbing/Rappelling
Conservation
Cycling/Mountain Biking
Emergency Preparedness
Equestrian
Expedition Planning
Fishing
Geocaching
Hunting
Orienteering
Outdoor Ethics/Leave No Trace
Outdoor Living History
Plants and Wildlife/Ecology
Scuba and/or Snorkeling
Shooting Sports
Small-Boat Sailing/Sailboarding
Wilderness First Aid
Wilderness Survival
Winter Sports
Although members of our troop have knowledge of many of these activities, several topics are still completely new, and we may not have experience with using our knowledge for a Scouting activity. Plus, getting a different perspective on how many of these activities can be run would be invaluable for future outings with our Scouts.
