Resection is an advanced navigation technique used to determine your location by using your compass to find the back azimuth to multiple known locations.
You should have a general idea of where you are at.
Find an identifiable terrain feature, such as a hill/mountain top.
Point your compass at your target. A sighting compass is preferred over a baseplate compass.
Rotate the "Doghouse" so that your compass needle is centered in it.
Calculate the Back Azimuth
Take the azimuth and subtract or add 180 degrees
On some compasses - it is easy to read the back azimuth on side of the compass facing you
Use your compass or protractor to draw an azimuth from your target to the area you think you are in
Make sure you account for magnetic declination with making calculations or using a compass with adjusted declination
Advanced trick - if using a clear baseplate compass with adjustable declination
Take forward azimuth (don't subtract 180 degrees)
Line up compass on map with compass facing target (180 of what is shown in image)
Draw your line
Use Terrain Features in your area to help pinpoint where you are at.
Using more than one know location will help you better pinpoint your true location.
Here you can see how 3 different Back Azimuths are better than 1.
