The 20-Miler is a significant accomplishment of any Scout or Scouter. It takes a bit of guts to attempt it and some intestinal fortitude to complete it. It's also a great way to get your crew ready for even big and more grand adventures.
Used for conditioning prior to high adventure, shakeouts for boots and gear, and earning the Hiking Merit Badge.
A 20-miler is special. Most healthy people should be able to do a 10-mile flat hike. A 15-miler is doable, but a 20-miler can be quite strenuous for many. Those not conditioned for hiking may need a day or two to recover from such a hike. Twenty miles will also test how your foot/sock/footwear combo works.
Older Scouts should be able to do a 20-Miler. First year Scouts can generally complete a 20-Miler, but will take a bit longer and may extend the hike time by an hour or more. Most Adults can pull this off, but a lot of them will look miserable at the end of the hike and the following day or two.
This is a fantastic Hike the follows Lake Washington to the Sammamish River from Magnuson Park to Marymoor Park.

21 miles from Hyak to Rattlesnake Lake
21 miles from Hyak to Rattlesnake Lake
Dop off at Hyak - and plan shuttle to Rattlesnake Lake Parking Lot
From Hyak when travel west via Snoqualmie Tunnel and Palouse to Cascades Trail
If parking at Rattlesnake Lake, plan for the lot to fill up early in the summer
Maybe plan for burgers and ice-cream at North Bend?
Highlights:
2.3-mile tunnel!
Wonderful scenic trail
Almost entirely downhill
This is a FANTASTIC experience (especially on a bike)!
Important Points:
This is NOT a trip for Scouts or Adults likely to give up - there is almost NO road access to pick up anyone
The tunnel ride is incredible and without lights - obviously everyone will need a headlight and/or headlamp
Basic economy headlamps aren’t great but will work
If on bike, Scouts will need to travel snow enough to see the handful of mud puddles in the tunnel
The rangers just open up the tunnel around June - call first. Tunnel is closed in the winter due to risk of falling ice form the ceiling. It is also really cold inside the tunnel.
Renting an electric bike is an option if you have special needs and want to follow crew
We have many choices to consider, including incredible routes, such as through the Enchantments. The following are entry level trails to get younger Scouts started.
Bothell to Redmond
Length: 11 miles - need to be a there and back hike unless you continue on to Burke-Gilman
Asphalt
Road does not follow route, but reasonable access to road for most of route
Point to Point option: Parking lot at Marymoor to Burke-Gilman Playground Park
20.7 miles
Connect to Burke-Gilman at end of Sammamish River Trail
Blyth Park at 10-mile point just past end of Sammamish River Trail(lunch?)
Second half is more urban than first
You can end at Magnuson Park or the Metropolitan Market (just a bit further, but with Ice Cream?)
Location: Duvall to Rattlesnake Lake (near Riverbend) - Connects to Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail
Trail surfaces: Gravel (includes sections of Road)
Trail category: Rail-Trail
Flattest portion of the trail extends about 9 miles from Duvall to Carnation
Location: Snohomish to Arlington
Trail surfaces: Asphalt
Trail category: Rail-Trail
snohomishcountywa.gov/Facilities/Facility/Details/Centennial-Trail-33
Some elevation and industrial zone pass-throughs
Crosses the Whitehorse Trail
Ends at the Nakashima Barn Trailhead
Location: Darrington to Arlington - Connects to Snohomish County Centennial Trail
Trail surfaces: Ballast, Gravel
Trail category: Rail-Trail
Mostly gravel with some muddy portions
Not as busy as many other trails
snohomishcountywa.gov/Facilities/Facility/Details/Whitehorse-Trail-105
Location: Everett to Seattle
Trail surfaces: Asphalt
Trail category: Rail-Trail
Numerous gaps exist -- and occasional closures
Location: Ballard to Bothell - connects to Sammamish River Trail
Trail surfaces: Asphalt
Trail category: Rail-Trail
Mostly flat asphalt route from Ballard to Bothell/Woodinville
Note:
"the Missing Link" - 1.4 miles along Shilshole Ave NW
Many busy street crossings
Many places to stop and eat - Burgers?
Location: Sedro-Woolley to Concrete
Trail surfaces: Crushed Stone, Gravel
Trail category: Rail-Trail
Bike camping is a fun option with nearby Rasar State Park
Henry Thompson Bridge - the longest single span cement bridge in US when it was constructed
