It's the final day of our Biking High Adventure. We discussed options and selected a 25 mile route starting in Rosalia. This allowed us to sleep in a little and allow us to drive home before nightfall.
We passed over the Rosalie Trestles and then east on the Palouse to Cascades Trail. Several bridges were out, requiring a down and then back up again climbs. At the one of the big bypasses, we met our SAG Wagon for second breakfast. We're going to miss those.
Further along the trail was the Seabury Bridge. This bridge didn't have railing on the sides and wasn't safe to ride across due the gaps in the wood planks that could easily swallow a bike tire. We walked across the bridge to park our bikes and came back for a photo. There was a really nice cool wind there so we took a small break there and enjoyed the breeze and view.
A few miles down the trail was the Tekoa Trestle. We crossed over the valley below on this 975 foot historic trestle. At the other end was break point and some of our parents met us there to say hi. We were only 6 miles from the Idaho border and the end of our journey.
The final leg was know for huge impassable mud holes filled with sticky mud. We found them, but the were dried up and rock solid. The rest of the trail was mostly shaded by Ponderosa pine. It smelled wonderful the and shade was a nice change from the previous 100 miles.
We reached Idaho and met with our entire support team ready to take us home. We had a short stop at Tekoa for Ice Cream and started our 5 hour ride home. For those who stayed awake for the ride home, it was amazing home far we had riding over the past 6 days. It spanned hundreds of miles of wheatfields, scablands, deserts and the the Cascades.
Our journey ended back at the camp and after quickly unloading of gear, riders joined their families and headed home.
We rode over 200 miles in the past 6 days and many more over the past 7 months for train up. What an Epic Adventure!
We packed up all of our gear at the Malden Community Center and loaded up our bikes on the trailer
Steptoe Battlefield State Park in Rosalia
We selected this start point so allow for more time to pack up gear and to allow Adults to sleep in a bit since they had a long drive ahead of them
We're off on our final day
We had to slow the lead rider who what peddling at triple the speed we have been going
This trail was relatively flat and allowed us to pick up a bit of speed
Being the final day, Scouts were cranking up the pace!
Our first break was at this Pandora bridge bypass
Note the remnants of the bridge above
The bypass took us north of the trail and then south down the road that was once covered by the bridge
We would take a break here and then travel east (right side of photo) back up the the trail
Breakfast Burritos still tasted great
We could have easily halved the snacks we carried considering the extra energy and fullness from the burritos and SAG Wagon treats and drinks
Filled up on water and fueld up and time to go
Has anyone ever noticed that these guys look similar?
A handful of bridges were out, casualties of wildfires and age
Most of these required us to descend to a road or dry creak and then race back up to the other side
Another missing bridge with bypass
Seabury Bridge
NOTE: this bridge is potential dangerous!
Note the lack of railings on the side and spaces between the boards that could grab a bike tire/wheel
Bikes should be walked across down the center and NOT ridden
Don't get too close to sides as wind gusts and clumsiness can push you off the bridge
Quick SAG Wagon Break before the Tekoa Trestle
Tekoa Trestle
We stopped in Tekoa to find some family waiting for us
We were eager to leave, but held up by our surprise visitors who wanted to spend time with us
Tekoa is only about 6 miles away from Idaho down this trail
It was difficulty to slow the pace to allow trail adults to keep up
Passing into Idaho!
Here we are at the finish line!
We Made It to Idaho!
