Adult Leader Training

Troop 60 has a skilled cadre of adult leaders.  We are lucky enough to have adults with unique backgrounds and special training covering many disciplines.

If you have a special skill, talent or resource, please come talk to us.

If you are considering joining our ranks, we want to help get you trained up so that we can provide our Scouts with a high quality program that is Safe and compliant with BSA standards.

Rule Number One in Scouting

Per February 2022 Guide to Safe Scouting:

Two registered adult leaders 21 years of age or over are required at all Scouting activities, including meetings. There must be a registered female adult leader 21 years of age or over in every unit serving females. A registered female adult leader 21 years of age or over must be present for any activity involving female youth. Notwithstanding the minimum leader requirements, age- and program appropriate supervision must always be provided

All adults accompanying a Scouting unit who are present at the activity for 72 total hours or more must be registered as leaders. The 72 hours need not be consecutive.

One-on-one contact between adult leaders and youth members is prohibited both, inside and outside of Scouting.

All Adult Leaders

All adult leaders must complete the following:

Troop Committee Members

Troop Committee Members meet as a group and discuss and plan for troop operations throughout the year.  Some Committee Members will also sit on Boards of Review with for our Scouts.  Troop Committee Members also provide day-to-day adult support if needed.  No one-on-one contact with youth is allowed at any time, which is covered in your Youth Protection Training.

Assistant Scoutmasters

Our Assistant Scoutmasters play a vital role in the troop.  We are mentors, role models and ensure the safety of our scouts at meetings and on outings.  Some of our outings require specialty training.  We highly encourage our Leaders to participate in as much training as possible.  This makes it possible to more types of activities and outings and in a mush safer way.

Wilderness First Aid is taught by cadre from our Troop.  Although we have great medical coverage on outings, you can never have too many trained adults when it comes to safety.  We highly encourage ALL adults attending outings complete this course.

Assistant Scoutmasters Requirements

To enhances our ability to deliver a high quality program to our scouts, we need specially trained or certified leaders for certain activities.  Because this is important to us, the troop pays for this training.

Special Skills Training

All ASMs and other Adult Leaders are highly encouraged to take Special Skills Training.  These skills enhance the quality of our program and the level of safety for all participants on an outing.

We highly recommend that ALL Adults who attend outings attend our Council's Wilderness First Aid Program.  This enhances the safety of all participants on outings.

All Adults attending a canoe outing MUST complete Canoe Training.  This covers basic use of a canoe as well as safety drills such as how to recover a swamped canoe.  For Adults, we cover more recovery techniques than we do for Scouts.  So if your training was completed way back when you were a Scout, we need to get you up to speed so you can keep our Scouts safe.

We encourage Adults to take any Special Skills Training they are interested in or will better prepare us for future outings.  We have a dedicated pages for Special Skills Training and feel free to come talk to our ASM team about what's available.

Merit Badge Counselor

With over 100 merit badges, you likely have a background that allows you to be a counselor for multiple badges.

Eligibility is determined by the Council.  Some MB require special training or certifications.  If you have questions, we can connect you with the council's Advancement Chair, who is also in Troop 60.

Merit Badge Counselor Requirements
