Members of Troop 60 reconned Colchuck Lake, the entrance to The Enchantments. We traveled 18 miles over two days and are planning a future trip through The Enchantments.
We also took several picture of berries for our Wilderness First Aid and Wilderness Survival Courses. We also saw a lot of thimbleberries and Oregon Grape.
It is around 9 miles from the Stuart Lake Trailhead to either Colchuck Lake or Stuart Lake and back the the trailhead. We went to Stuart Lake (elevation gain around 1,900 feet) on Saturday and Colchuck Lake (elevation gain around 2,400 feet) on Sunday.
Camping is available at Stuart Lake if you have a permit.
The Enchantments starts at Aasgard Pass, which sits at the base of Colchuck Lake. For an adventure of a lifetime, consider traversing The Enchantments. It's 18.5 miles with 4,900ft of elevation gain through some of the most beautiful places in the world. In the spring, The Enchantments will still have a lot of snow cover. In the summer, The Enchantments with be green and spectacular. In the fall, if you time it just right, the Larches will turn golden, making for a very interesting landscape.
The Enchantments can be done over 2 or more days but you will need a permit. In order to get a camping permit, you will need to "win the lottery". The lottery opens in February - see https://www.recreation.gov/permits/233273.
If you have very fit Scouts and 2 equally fit Adult Leaders, it is possible to traverse The Enchantments in a single day. This will require a bit of support to at least stage one or more vehicles at the end point, but ideally have a support team drop off your group and pick you up on the other end. It's best to start your traverse through The Enchantments in the early morning so you have a chance of finishing it by nightfall. Plan on 12 hours of travel time for really fit people who don't need breaks. Plan to filter water along the way and to use headlamps towards the end of your adventure. This should ONLY be attempted by extra fit Adventurers.
