Disclaimer

There are significant dangers associated with both Open Water and Moving Water canoe outings.  Units undertaking a Scouting Adventure on either a large body of water or moving water need more than just the basic skills and knowledge required by the BSA to conduct such a trip safely.

Our Troop has several adults with extensive experience and professional training in watercraft use, sailing and whitewater.  If you are planning a Canoe trip and do not have an experienced adult leader able to assess flow rates, wind and "read water", you should reconsider a water outing until you have the proper resources and people to make your trip safe.

    • It should still be stored in a waterproof case - such as in a Large NRS HydroLock Mapcessory Map Case

• GPS App

  • If you don’t have Gaia or Caltopo downloaded on your phone – you really should have these for navigation

    • Being able to navigate in thick fog and in the dead of night is much easier with a GPS

    • The GPS will be helpful to the best of old school paper map navigators  

  • Try to upload GPS Files to your GPS app

    • Works great when online for folks that don't have a GPS app

      • Great for stay behind support team

    • Only works for a short period after you go offline

    • If you are savvy, you can use map as a template for marking favorite spots which seems to work then offline

      • Mark all group sites so you can navigate to them if needed

      • If you are really savvy, you should just install GaiaGPS and download the GPS files and offline maps

    • You will need to download area for offline use

      • Go ahead and download Bowron and ENTIRE BC area between Bowron and US - you'll need it when finding a place to eat or shop on way to and from Bowron
