Fort Worden 2023

Date: November 17-19, 2023

Another great outing at Fort Worden.  Some Scouts and families arrived on Friday while others arrived on Saturday morning.  We set up camp and took over the local fort.

A Park Ranger gave us a history lesson on the Fort and how the local area was carved out by glaciers.

Overall a great outing with good friends and great food!

We tried out a new type of fire technique.  Not sure if this has ever been done, but we used a box of puzzles from the Dollar Store, a piece of granite found on the beach and a steel striker.  The puzzle tin was charred and the rock was broken in half to make sharp edges.

Finding a good stone for striking our striker was more challenging than expected.  The beach lacked any flint or obsidian and didn't even have quartz.  We found lots of granite.  It produced minimal sparks, so getting a spark to land just right on the char was more challenging than normal.

We tried charring different types of driftwood and none would take a spark.  But the puzzle pieces worked great and easily started a tinder bundle made from grass ignite.

We also tried a bow drill made from driftwood, but the winds kept blowing the char pile away so we gave up on that approach.

Adult dinner consisted of Steak and smoked Chicken.  Adult went to bed with a full stomach and a smile on their faces.

Early in the morning, we started a fire and in the darkness, we were approached by a 6 foot tall monkey.

Morning fires are great!

It was interesting to see all the different types of camp chairs brought on this outing.  This one was made with items found on the beach and then returned where they were found.

Sausage, eggs, potatoes and steak.  Not a bad meal to start the day off with!

Adult meals are always fantastic when our Master Chefs attend our outings!  And for those with a taste for spices, we had a special sauce made from onions and Hungarian Peppers.
