Specialty Adult Leader Training
Our Adult Leaders have a diverse set of skills. This enhances our Scouts' experience in Scouting and allows us to do some pretty fun activities and events.
Adults should consider taking any of the following courses that interests them or will better prepare them to particiapte in or plan a future outing. The more skilled and trained adults we have, the more activities our Scouts can participate in.
Safety and Outdoors Training
Safety is our Number One Concern. Our Troop is all about getting out there for High Adventure and do to that, we have to know and be prepared to do so in a safe manner.
Wilderness First Aid
We encourage all ASMs to attend this course
Training enhances safety on outings and our ability to train scouts
Our Troop delivers this course twice a year to the Council
Winter Skills Adventure Program
We teach and send Scouts and adults to this training each year
Highly recommend that you take this course if you plan to attend a winter campout with the Troop
We cover several safety and planning considerations for winter outings
Wilderness Survival and Bushcraft
Learn basic and advanced survival techniques
Survival skills may become necessary should:
The group becomes stuck overnight on a day trip because of weather, train conditions or injury
You become separated from your gear due to weather, terrain or because you are lost
Understanding the basics of survival can keep you alive, keep your more comfortable or just help you avoid common pitfalls
We have specially trained instructors in our Troop
Hazardous Weather Training
All “direct contact” leaders are required to take BSA’s Hazardous Weather Training
Questions? Come talk to our Medical Team. We teach these classes for the Council and can get you trained up properly.
Aquatics Training
Water is dangerous and potentially deadly for the unprepared. Adults who participate in water and paddle sports need to be strong swimmers. Beyond that, they should complete all training available to our Troop safe on and in the water.
Safety Afloat
Developed to promote boating and boating safety and to set standards for safe unit activity afloat

Safe Swim Defense Training
Covers plan for conducting swimming activities in a safe manner

Canoe Training
If you plan to attend a canoe outing, you must attend Canoe Training
We will teach you the basics of paddling, how to recover a capsized canoe, and how to be safe on the water
Paddle Craft Safety
Expands Safety Afloat training to include the skills and knowledge needed for a unit leader to confidently supervise canoeing or kayaking excursions on flat water
Swimming & Water Rescue
Information and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to swimming emergencies during unit swimming activities

Climbing Training
COPE Training
COPE training is required when running a COPE or Climbing event
We generally need a COPE Level 1 and COPE Level 2 to operate the Climbing wall at Fire Mountain

Leadership Training
Wood Badge
The is the premier Leadership Course for the BSA and has been around since the beginning of Scouting
This week long (or two weekend) course teaches the BSA's style of leadership training
Learn and be a part of the Patrol Method
Even if you are former military, you will learn new leadership skills and better ways to develop leadership within our Troop
Wood Badge covers a lot of the material that is covered in NYLT (Scout version of this course)
Puts you on the same page as your senior Scouts in regards to team building
Come back with new Scouting Skills and a broader understanding of how Scouting works
Make connections with other scouters in this and local Councils
Recognition
If you are into swag, you get a globally recognized brown neckerchief, wood beads and a special woggle
Order of the Arrow
The Order of the Arrow is the honor society of the Boy Scouts of America, composed of Scouts and Scouters that are more active and involved in Scouting
Special training is conducted at different levels of the Order of the Arrow
Inclusion in the Order of the Arrow will also allow you to connect with some of the most active Adults in the BSA

Shooting Sports Training
We are lucky enough to have enough shooting sports instructors in our Troop to run any type of shooting activity authorized by the BSA. That said, we can always use more help and a have a larger margin of safety.
BB Gun and Archery Cub Scout Training
Some Councils allow troops to run BB gun or Archery events with this credential (usually District and Council events)
This is a good introduction into running a BSA range
Troop 60 has NRA and USA Archery Instructors in our troop and prefers to use this BSA standard
NRA Basic
Excellent introduction courses covering safety and fundamentals of shooting per specific shooting discipline
Prerequisite for Instructor Courses

NRA Instructor
A discipline specific Instructor is required anytime we shoot firearms
Merit Badge Counselors for Rifle and Shotgun must be NRA Instructor Certified for their respective discipline
More trained instructors means more eyes on the range
NRA recommends 1:5 instructors per students
BSA requires 1:8 instructors per Scout
The BSA has 4 major firearm disciplines:

Muzzleloading Instructor
NRA Range Safety Officer
1 RSO is required for every shooting event we conduct
BSA requires 1:8 RSO per Scout
This can be completed virtually if you are already an NRA Instructor
Needs to be completed in person if you are not already an NRA Instructor
USA Archery
USA Archery Level 1 Instructor
Required to run BSA Archery events
Course covers basic archery fundamentals and how to safely run an archery range
BSA requires 1:8 instructors per Scout
USA Archery Level 2 Instructor
Required for Level 1 Instructor certification
USA Archery has a tiered training program for instructors that progresses up to Level 5
More fundamentals are covered in Level 2 training, then Level 2 and so on
Some councils requires a USA Archery Level 2 Instructor to run Archery events at Council Level
