Day 5 started out rough. The dog in the house next to the school barked most of the night. Barking was only interrupted when the train came by and blew its distinctive horn. Those who slept outside didn't really sleep much.
We started again before day break in the dark. The trail had a slight uphill grade and a few of the bridges were long gone, require us to ride down to the road and back up to the trail. The surface was mostly composed of smooth gravel, which was loose in spots and really lumpy and hard in others.
We evacuated a sick scout with one of our adult riders (for 2 deep YP) at the first planned SAG Wagon Stop. At the second SAG Wagon stop, our SAG support was still at camp and we opted to continue our ride without a refill. This may not have been the best choice, but as with other days, it only gets hotter and hotter as the sun climbs overhead.
We traveled east to the Cow Creek Bypass. We reconned the bypass with satellite images, which showed many dirt roads. When we got there, we found a welcome sign for riders and a gate. There was a dirt trail composed of soft sand and no tire tracks. Without a GPS, it would be easy to get lost here and without having it mapped out on the GPS, we probably would have and should have turned around. The route took us up and down a sandy track with grass and occasional cows on either side. By the time we got to the end of the bypass, several riders were completely out of water. Luckily our adult and scout ride leaders had loads of extra water to distribute and the end of the ride was just down the trail.
Today was not as hot as any of the previous days and we didn't need much of a cool off period before loading up and heading to camp. Our plan would be to camp out the the Malden City Park, 35 miles from the Idaho border. When we arrived, we met with the nice folks from city hall and they opened up the community center for us to sleep in. Everyone was pretty worn out after 5 days of riding and no real sleep the night before. Most of the riders napped or stared at their phones until dinner and then when to bed by 9PM. The weather was forecasted to be relatively cool the next day and we slept until 6am.
