Return from Bowron Lakes Canoe Circuit
We saw many interesting plants on the trail. Some were edible and others were poisonous to eat or touch.
There were SO many poisonous plants out there. In most places, the majority of the berries we could see where toxic and many of the plants would tear up your skin with nasty spines or poisons.
For this trip, all plants would be considered poisonous.
Cow Parsnip
Poisonous to Touch!
Plants with an "umbrella" top in Bowron are usually from the carrot family and are toxic to touch or eat.
There were all over the trails and camps and must be avoided.
Do NOT touch or rub against these.
Not shown here is Water Hemlock, which looks similar to Cow Parsnip and Angelica, but is far more deadly. Water Hemlock is known to grow in Bowron, but wasn't identified by our crew on this trip.
In many areas, Devil's Club was common or even took over the landscape. Brushing against these would be very painful and can lead to infection.
Kneeling Angelica
Poisonous to Touch!
Many of the berries we would encounter of the trip are eddible and quite wonderful to eat. Other berries were very poisonous and you can somethimes find edibles and poisonous plants intertwined together. Because of the remoteness of Bowron and risk of poisoning or allergic reaction, all berries would be considered poisonous.
